INAUGURAL SINGAPORE DAY DRAWS THOUSANDS largest-ever turnout by OVERSEAS SINGAPOREANS for an event

The familiar voice of singer Kit Chan, the unmistakable smell of Char Kway Teow, and the shape of things to come in Singapore drew more than 5,000 thousand people to the first-ever Singapore Day on a beautiful spring day at New York¡¯s Central Park on 21 April 2007.
Overseas Singaporeans living in and around New York City accounted for a majority of the visitors, said the Overseas Singaporean Unit, or OSU, the event¡¯s organiser.
Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng and Singapore¡¯s Ambassador to the United States, Chan Heng Chee, were among the guests who were treated to entertainment by Singaporean performers including Royston Tan, Kit Chan and comic trio the Chestnuts; while feasting on food prepared by 12 hawkers flown in from Singapore.
Besides the food and entertainment, visitors were also updated on developments in Singapore through a multi-media display.
A gallery put together by Singaporean Traslin Ong, who is based in New York, celebrated the successes and achievements of several Overseas Singaporeans in various professions.
Later in the evening, 280 guests attended the Singapore Day dinner at the New York Public Library¡¯s Celeste Bartos Forum. DPM Wong was also the Guest-of-Honour and delivered a speech.
In his speech, DPM Wong declared Singapore Day an overwhelming success, and said that the purpose for organising it were three-fold ¨C keep Overseas Singaporeans informed of developments in Singapore; provide a platform for Overseas Singaporeans in and around New York to network among each other, and excite the Overseas Singaporean community about opportunities in Singapore and the region.
DPM Wong concluded by urging Overseas Singaporeans to stay connected no matter where they may be.
