Consumer Price Index, 2006
Compared with 2005, the CPI for general households rose by 1.0 per cent in 2006. This was higher than the 0.5 per cent increase recorded in the previous year.
The CPI for households in the lowest 20%, middle 60% and top 20% income groups went up by 1.8 per cent, 1.1 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively in 2006.
The higher inflation rates were attributed mainly to dearer electricity tariffs and taxi fares, as well as costlier food, cigarettes and petrol. These price increases were partially offset by lower car prices and government levy for domestic maids.
