5 Arrested in Police Anti-Piracy Operation Against Distribution And Sales of Fake Luxury and Sportwear Products
　
In a 13-hour island-wide operation conducted from 9.30am to 11.00pm on 11 July 2007, Police busted a major local distributor and a syndicate involved in the sale and distribution of counterfeit luxury and sportswear products.
In March 2007, Police received information on syndicated piracy activities at trade fairs island-wide.
Further probes revealed that the syndicate operated illicitly from make-shift stalls at trade fairs in several heartland estates. Investigations further revealed that a major local distributor was supplying the stalls with their counterfeit goods. The probes culminated in police raids at Ang Mo Kio, North Bridge Road, Defu Lane and People¨s Park Complex on 11 July 2007.
A total of 5 persons comprising 3 males and 2 females, including 3 foreigners, aged between 31 and 51 years old, were arrested in the operation.
The 3 foreigners will be charged in Court on 13 July 2007 and remanded for further investigations. Investigations against the rest are still on-going.
More than 8,500 trademark infringing luxury and sportswear products with an estimated street value of about S$300,000 were seized for the purposes of investigation. The products included leather bags and wallets.
Police take a serious view of intellectual property rights violations and will continue to clamp down hard on syndicates involved in the sale and distribution of counterfeit products.
DSP Sharmaine Ong, Head of Intellectual Property Rights Branch, CID said, "To the criminals out there, think twice before you decide to engage in intellectual property piracy. Police will not tolerate such blatant disrespect of the intellectual property rights law and will continue to take swift and stern action to eradicate piracy syndicates in Singapore."
Persons found in possession of infringing articles for the purposes of trade or manufacture in which a registered trade mark is falsely applied may face a fine up to $10,000 per article, or to a maximum of $100,000 for all items or to a maximum jail term of 5 years or both.
