Man Arrested for Making Bomb Hoax Calls
Police have arrested a 43 year-old Malay man in connection with making two bomb hoax calls.
At about noon on 2 June 07, the culprit, a freelance web page designer, called the SCDF control room to inform that there was a bomb at Raffles Place. SCDF immediately reported the call to the Police.
A search was immediately conducted in the vicinity of Raffles Place for any suspicious articles. Efforts were also immediately made to trace the caller.
With the help of SCDF and the security office at Clifford Centre where the call was found to have originated, a description of the caller was quickly established. Police officers on patrol were told to look out for the caller.
Subsequently, around 2.30pm, the same caller made a second call to the SCDF control room informing that someone had planted bombs at Orchard Road and the Tanjong Pagar area.
A general search was conducted to ensure the safety of the two areas mentioned. The call was traced to have originated from International Plaza and with the help of the security office, the same suspect was established.
A search for the suspect was conducted. The man was soon spotted at the Turf Club outlet at International Plaza at around 3.50pm and was arrested on the spot.
The man will be charged in Court on 4 Jun 2006 for Breach of Regulations under Section 5(1) of the United Nations Act, Chapter 339. This offence carries a fine not exceeding $100,000/- or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years or to both.
Assistant Commissioner Raymond Khoo, Commander of Central Police Division, would like to commend his officers for the excellent teamwork resulting in the swift arrest.
He also expressed his appreciation to the SCDF officers and security offices of Clifford Centre and International Plaza for their speedy responses and cooperation. He would like to remind members of the public that giving bomb hoax messages will tie down scarce security resources. Police will spare no efforts in tracking down the perpetrators and prosecuting them.
