The uniquely Singaporean experience of
National Service (NS) will be chronicled in a new Army Museum of
Singapore, to be opened next year. |
|
Marked as a key initiative to celebrate the
40th anniversary of NS in 2007, the museum will preserve the heritage of
the Singapore Army and honour the contributions of our soldiers and
their experiences. |
|
Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean
officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony of the museum this morning (21
Jun 2006). |
|
The Army Museum of Singapore, which will be
open to the public, was one of the recommendations made last year by the
Fourth Committee to Recognise the Contributions of Operationally Ready
NSmen to Total Defence (RECORD IV) chaired by Minister for Manpower and
Second Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen. |
|
The museum will be housed in a new 3-storey
building to be constructed close to the SAFTI Military Institute. |
|
The museum will feature six galleries that
showcase the Army's development from its formative years to the present. |
|
The shared NS experience of
Singapore's sons will also be captured through exhibits such as a
mock-up of a 1970s soldier's bunk, multimedia shows, and displays
of army equipment complemented by the 'sounds and smells' of
battle. |

Besides paying tribute to the 700,000
Singaporeans from all walks of life who have served in the Army over
the last 39 years, the museum also promises an experiential journey
for all visitors and servicemen alike. |
|
NSmen past and present can revisit and
reminisce on their Army and NS experiences, while other visitors can
learn about the contributions of NSmen to the Army, and reflect on
the vital role they have collectively played in contributing to the
defence of Singapore. |
