CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT, 2006

More establishments granting family care and paternity leave

More establishments are granting family care and paternity leave to their employees, the latest Conditions of Employment Survey conducted by the Ministry of Manpower¡¯s Research and Statistics Department has shown.
While flexible work arrangements in Singapore have also increased over the years, they are still not widespread.
Hence there is scope for employers to do more to address the rising expectations of employees for more flexible and family-friendly employment practices.
A wider availability of flexible and pro-family working arrangements can encourage more women and older persons to stay economically active and longer in the workforce.
The survey also reveals that the 5-day workweek continues to be the norm for full-time employees in the private sector.
The trend towards employees having more annual leave has also stabilised in recent years. These are some of the findings from the survey which covers 2,600 private sector firms with at least 25 employees.
The 21-page ¡°Conditions of Employment, 2006¡± report provides a snapshot of employment conditions such as work-week pattern, annual leave entitlement and sickness absenteeism.
The report also examines the prevalence of flexible work arrangements and other pro-family benefits such as family care and paternity leave. For highlights of the findings, please refer to the Annex.
The full report is available online on the Ministry of Manpower¡¯s website at http://www.mom.gov.sg.
