Incident at Speakers' Corner

On 16 Sept 2006, Chee Soon Juan and a few of his associates gathered in the late morning at the Speakers' Corner.
Chee had earlier repeatedly declared that he would lead a protest march and hold rallies at Speakers' Corner, Parliament House, Suntec Convention Centre and the Istana. The Police had advised the public not to be involved as the procession would be an offence.
After making speeches at Speakers' Corner, Chee attempted to proceed on a protest march to Parliament House.
However, he and his group were stopped by the Police and advised not to break the law. This attracted a curious crowd of bystanders and media personnel.
As at 10.15pm, Chee and his group are still at Speakers' Corner, with a crowd of about 20 bystanders.
The Police will be investigating the incident. The Police are appreciative that their advisory has been observed and that the public did not participate in the protest march. In fact, the Police received feedback from the public about nuisance and disruption to traffic arising from the incident.
