setting up of 3rd Privately-Funded School |
|
﹛ |
|
|
The Ministry of Education (MOE) has reviewed
the proposals received for setting up privately-funded schools. |
|
Approval has been given to SJI
(International), submitted jointly by the De La Salle Brothers
Singapore, SJI Board of Governors and SJI Old Boys* Association. |
|
Evaluation |
|
The proposals for setting up
privately-funded schools were evaluated based on the quality of the
programmes, the credibility of the operators and whether they would be a
valuable addition to the education landscape. |
|
The proposal submitted jointly by De La
Salle Brothers Singapore, SJI Board of Governors and SJI Old Boys*
Association was approved based on the strength of the management team,
the coherence of their curriculum offerings and the quality of education
they can potentially offer to their students. |
|
Background |
|
In Oct 2002, the Junior College/Upper
Secondary Education Review Committee, chaired by Mr Tharman
Shanmugaratnam, who was then Senior Minister of State for Trade and
Industry & Education, recommended greater diversity in the education
landscape in the form of alternative curricula and qualifications,
different mix of schools, and different programmes. |
|
Setting up a few privately-funded schools
was one of the key recommendations of the committee. This was endorsed
by Parliament in Nov 2002. |
|
The first round of privately-funded school
proposals submission was conducted in 2003. Approval was given to ACS
(International) and Hwa Chong International School, both of which
started in January 2005. |
|
On 5 June 06, MOE invited a second
round of proposals for privately funded schools. MOE received nine
proposals by the close of submission on 31 July 06. They were
