Police arrested five illegal immigrants on
29 Jan 06 at about 12.20 am, at sea about 5 km south off Bedok Jetty,
East Coast Park, while they were attempting to enter Singapore using a
wooden rowing sampan. |

The Police Coast Guard, through the use of
night vision surveillance equipment, detected the five men in a 5-metre
long rowing sampan approaching Singapore waters. |
|
A police patrol boat intercepted the rowing sampan
immediately when they entered Singapore territorial waters. |
|
The men, aged between 15 and 25 years old,
who were all without any valid travel documents, were placed under
arrest. |
|
This makes a total of 7 illegal immigrants
arrested for attempting to enter Singapore by sea so far this year. |
|
Four of the five men, believed to be
Indonesian nationals between 18 and 25 years old, will be charged in
court on 30 Jan 06 for unlawful entry into Singapore. |
|
If convicted, they can be jailed up to 6
months, caned at least 3 strokes, or fined up to $6,000/-. The other
man believed to be a 15-yr old Indonesian national will be referred
to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore for
repatriation. |

Commander Police Coast Guard, Deputy
Assistant Commissioner Jerry See, said, "Illegal immigrants should
think twice before trying out such high risk attempts to enter
Singapore . We will maintain a tight patrol along our borders and
will take swift and stern actions against those who attempt to enter
Singapore illegally." |
