Whether you are a Singaporean or an expatriate seeking to
employ a maid in Singapore, you will simply love the fact
that someone has actually penned a book to help you through
the whole process of getting a maid.
|
|
This book by Margaret Short Sierakowski contains the A-Z of
hiring a maid. It helps you get together an employment
package covering salary, food and meals, living quarters,
home leave, bonuses, and severance pay. You learn tips on
how to get your maid to return promptly from her overseas
vacation in her home country. You also pick up pointers on
how to get your maid to start her own savings plan so that
when she leaves you, she does not leave without any money
saved.
|
|
The book also helps you plan your maid's daily routine in
your home, setting out the duties she has to perform as well as
privileges she is entitled to. There is a sample Daily
Schedule in the Appendix which you can modify and implement
according to your family's needs. You are also shown how to
be firm with your maid in a tactful manner.
|
|
What I like about the book is its humane approach towards
maid management. It encourages you to provide decent living
quarters, as well as basic toiletries, for your maid. It
also encourages you to look beyond the employment contract
and give tokens of your appreciation in the form of bonuses
and severance pay to your maid even though you may have no
obligations whatsoever to do such things.
|
|
The rest of the book deals with interviews, specialised care
of children and the elderly and evaluation of the maid. In
the appendix is a sample Employee Job Contract spelling out
the details between you and your maid so that
misunderstanding will be reduced. This is not the same one
that has been signed with the maid agency.
|
|
Both employer and maid should read this book in order to
gain valuable insight into the business of employing and
managing a maid. The author, Margaret, who has run Hiring A
Maid courses here in Singapore during her stay between 1989
and 1998, has incorporated into the book comprehensive
content from the courses she ran. A good read!
