At last,
you can go online to view the complete records of the laws
of Singapore in the comfort of your office or home. The
Government has placed its entire collection of all Singapore
Statutes online.
You can search Singapore
Statutes by their proper name, such as Termination Of
Pregnancy Act (Cap 324), or subject, such as abortion.
While the search is
pretty easy to use, what you can't avoid is the legal jargon
used in the Statutes. That's what the law is all about -
wrapping its words in legal jargon to prevent errant
law-breakers from worming their way out of conviction by
finding loopholes in the wording of the laws.
So you
need a good grasp of the English language in order to
understand thoroughly what is being said in the Statutes.
But, if
you are just seeking general information on the areas you
are interested in, you can pretty well grasp what the laws
cover just by reading the Statutes - that is if you have at
least received secondary education.
Just who
will benefit from looking up the Singapore Statutes? -
Everyone, from the young to the old!
Teenagers, I am sure, will be interested in reading the
Termination Of Pregnancy Act (Cap 324) to find out how the
law protects them in the event of an unwanted pregnancy.
People
who have borrowed money from moneylenders or loansharks can
find out more about the Moneylenders Act (Cap 188)
Parents
will want to know everything about what the Children &
Young Persons Act (Cap 38) Pt.II does to protect their
children from wayward adults.
